Summary[]
Elizabeth McCord is brought in as the Secretary of State after the untimely death of the previous Secretary, Vincent Marsh. Shortly after accepting the job, Elizabeth's friend and former CIA operative and analyst, George Peters, dies in a car accident, under suspicious circumstances. Elizabeth spends her time juggling matters of state, all while looking into the suspicious deaths of former Secretary Marsh and George Peters.

After the death of death of Vincent Marsh, Conrad Dalton, the 45th President of the United States, decides to appoint Elizabeth McCord to the position, his long-time friend and who used to one of his favorites in the CIA during his time as CIA director and Elizabeth's time as a CIA analyst. Elizabeth is originally shocked when Dalton offers her the position and takes some convincing to accept it. After her confirmation, Elizabeth is immediately presented with a maelstrom of complex foreign policy issues, the most pressing of the moment, a situation with Syria, where two American citizens are being held hostage. CIA director Munsey and Elizabeth McCord plot an operation to liberate the kids, only for Munsey to proceed with the operation 2 hours early without consulting Elizabeth. The operation is classified as a failure as the kids were not found, and it is discovered that the Syrians gave the US disinformation to gain leverage in the hostage negotiations. When Russell Jackson and Elizabeth debate over how to proceed, President Dalton ultimately sides with Russell Jackson, irritating Elizabeth and making her question whether she will be able to serve as an effective Secretary of State. Elizabeth ultimately disobeys Dalton's order and meets with a contact in the Russian embassy to negotiate the hostage's release. Elizabeth goes directly to Dalton to confess her actions, but he allows for her to proceed with them as long as they don't harm the administration and the hostages are returned safely U.S. hostages. | ||||||
