Dmitri Petrov (Russian: Дми́трий Петров) is a Russian-American spy, former Russian Army captain, and former student at the National War College in Washington, D.C, where he was recruited by his professor, Henry McCord, to spy on the Russian government on behalf of the DIA and CIA. Dmitri is a computer expert whose skills as a hacker make him a valuable asset to the American government and its intelligence agencies. He is portrayed by Chris Petrovski.
Biography[]
Dmitri is a 24-year-old Russian Army captain. He is a student at the National War College in Washington, D.C, under professor Henry McCord.
Season 2[]
Henry had initially advocated for recruiting Dmitri instead of Ivan Kolashkov, citing Dmitri's analytical mind, discretion, and discipline as assets for intelligence work. He also noted Dmitri’s complex family history—his father’s death in Chechnya and his Georgian grandfather—as potential sources of inner conflict and counter-nationalist sentiment that could be cultivated. Henry strongly opposed leveraging blackmail, arguing for a more ethical and reliable recruitment strategy based on psychological insight rather than exploiting secrets.
When Dmitri's sister, Talia, was diagnosed with cancer, Henry leveraged Dmitri's plan to drop out of the War College to care for her, offering access to an experimental drug trial in Stockholm in exchange for Dmitri spying on Russia. Initially resistant, Dmitri refused, citing his patriotism and accusing Henry of manipulation.
After Pavel Ostrov's death, Henry revisited the offer, warning Dmitri of Russia's escalating instability and revealing that top officials were relocating their families abroad. Realizing his sister's life was at risk, Dmitri reluctantly agreed, entrusting Henry with her safety and beginning his work gathering intelligence on Russian leadership and military plans.
In The Rusalka, Dmitri begins his work as a spy for the Americans under orders from the DIA. His first assignment is to attend President Ostrov’s memorial at the Russian embassy and gather information on potential successors to the Russian leadership. Despite his efforts, he fails to obtain any significant intelligence. Later, Dmitri is approached by two Russians who accuse him of spying for the Americans. It is revealed that this was a loyalty test set up by the DIA, which he successfully passes. The episode ends with Dmitri in emotional turmoil, tearing apart his room at the war college, overwhelmed by his precarious situation and growing sense of powerlessness as a reluctant double agent.
In The Long Shot, General Doroshevich returns, and Henry advises Dmitri to attend an event at the Russian Embassy to gather information on Maria Ostrov’s plans. During the event, Dmitri overhears a key statement from the General: “Russia without Ukraine is a country. Russia with Ukraine is an empire,” confirming an imminent move to attack Ukraine. Dmitri also learns that Maria Ostrov plans to bring Olga, Gorev’s daughter, to the embassy, likely to use her as leverage in the upcoming election. Dmitri relays this information to Henry, who acts quickly to save Olga.
In Catch and Release, Dmitri is confronted with the harsh realities of Maria Ostrov’s oppressive policies. His friend Ivan, a closeted gay officer, is recalled to Moscow under a crackdown on “foreign agents disseminating western propaganda,” targeting homosexual military personnel. Dmitri, fearing for Ivan’s safety, asks Henry to help him stay in the United States. When the DIA refuses to assist, Henry advises Ivan to seek asylum, but Ivan struggles with the idea of leaving his life as a soldier behind. Dmitri tries to reassure Ivan that General Doroshevich might be willing to help him avoid being sent back to Moscow. Later, Henry receives a message from Ivan thanking him, but his instincts tell him something is wrong. He rushes to Ivan’s dorm but finds that Ivan has taken his own life. This devastating event leaves Dmitri overwhelmed, leading him to have a panic attack and request asylum for himself. Dmitri expresses fear for his own safety, citing Russia’s return to Stalin-like policies. Henry persuades Dmitri to reconsider, encouraging him to take Ivan’s place and return to Moscow, where he could potentially make a difference.
After returning to Russia to infiltrate the GRU, Dmitri obtained sensitive information regarding a potential invasion of Ukraine. However, as Presidents Conrad Dalton and Maria Ostrova were in the midst of negotiating a peace treaty, the United States was forced to give up Petrov's name as a spy in exchange for Russia's signing of the deal. While Dmitri attended the signing in Switzerland, Russian officials took him into custody. Dmitri was later returned to the United States as part of a spy swap negotiated between the two countries.
Season 3[]

After returning to the United States under the alias "Alexander Mehranov," Dmitri was relocated to Phoenix, Arizona, where he was assigned to work in IT, a position far below his skill level. Struggling to adapt to the isolation of his new identity and unable to contact his sister, who still believed he was dead, Dmitri began to show signs of emotional distress. His frustration culminated in an incident where he damaged a customer’s TV during a service call while it broadcast coverage of the bombing in Illinois. Following this outburst, his handler contacted Henry McCord, who intervened by arranging for Talia to be brought to the United States, providing Dmitri with a vital personal connection.
Henry later approached Dmitri with an offer to join him in his new role at the CIA's Special Activities Division. This came after Russia violated the terms of their agreement by covertly invading Bulgaria, nullifying the deal that had kept Dmitri in hiding. Recognizing Dmitri’s invaluable expertise—particularly his insights into Vladimir Doroshevich’s network—Henry sought his help in analyzing intelligence. Dmitri, while acknowledging the risks, agreed and began assisting with efforts to track Russian operatives tied to the invasion.

During one such visit to Henry’s home, Dmitri reviewed intelligence and identified Oleg Gruzinsky, a key figure in Salnikov’s financial operations, who was conspicuously missing from the matrix. Dmitri provided critical details about Gruzinsky’s ties to Doroshevich and his role as Salnikov's money launderer, which Henry immediately acted on. Their meeting was briefly interrupted when Stevie returned home unexpectedly to retrieve concert tickets. Dmitri was introduced to her under his alias, "Alexander Mironov," marking their first encounter before she hurried off to rejoin Jareth.
Season 4[]
Upon Dmitri's return to Washington, D.C., it is revealed that he has been battling an opioid addiction, stemming from the painkillers prescribed to treat injuries he sustained during his imprisonment and torture in Russia. While attempting to manage his addiction and adjust to his new role, Dmitri struggled with his temper and emotional control. During a tense exchange with coworkers joking about Russian brutality as a recruitment tool, Dmitri snapped, vividly recounting the torture methods he endured in prison. The confrontation left him feeling alienated, and he stormed out.
Later, Dmitri ran into Stevie at a convenience store. Recognizing him, she initiated a lighthearted conversation, which allowed them to connect despite the awkwardness of the moment. Though brief, their exchange provided a moment of ease for Dmitri in the midst of his challenges.
Following the incident, Henry reprimanded Dmitri for his behavior, questioning his temperament for intelligence work and stressing the importance of maintaining composure to avoid vulnerabilities. Henry arranged for Dmitri to resume therapy with Dr. Thorton. In response, Dmitri admitted to struggling with opioid addiction. Though initially weaned off, he turned to the streets for relief when the pain persisted, eventually becoming dependent. With shame, Dmitri confessed to lying to his sister and apologized for how it had compromised him.
In The Essentials, Henry reported the matter to CIA Director Haymond, who acknowledged the gravity of the breach but also emphasized Dmitri’s value to the intelligence community, citing his past contributions and his potential role in countering Russian efforts in Afghanistan. Recognizing the toll the job takes, Haymond arranged for Dmitri to be admitted to a discreet rehab facility to address his addiction and evaluate his readiness to continue in his role. Henry agreed to manage the process and took full responsibility for any future risks. Dmitri fully recovered during his time in rehab and returned to his position following the shutdown.
In Loophole, after spending the evening at Henry’s house, Dmitri runs into Stevie, who is returning home after cleaning out her belongings from her ex-fiancé’s apartment following their breakup. They exchange a brief conversation, during which Stevie mentions adjusting to the end of her relationship. Before leaving, she takes Dmitri’s phone, enters her number, and encourages him to call her sometime.
Dmitri and Stevie meet at a bar for their first date, where Stevie teases him for arriving late. Dmitri apologizes, compliments her, and admits he’s uncertain about dating her due to his work with her father. Stevie reassures him, suggesting they keep things casual and discreet since she isn’t ready for anything serious after a recent breakup. As the night ends, Dmitri hesitates, worried about the complications, but Stevie insists her father wouldn’t interfere. Despite his reservations, Dmitri calls the evening wonderful but avoids committing. After their next date, Dmitri decides not to let her father’s involvement stop him, and they move forward.
After his cover was compromised, Dmitri was once again sent away- this time to Alaska, where he would remain for three years- and he and Stevie were forced to part ways.
Season 5[]
After hearing about the bomb set off in the oval office, Dmirtri convinces his sister Talia to check on Stevie's well-being.
Season 6[]
He returned to D.C. once more when the United States and Russia signed an amnesty deal for spies, and he and Stevie began dating. Eventually the pair became engaged, and planned their wedding at a venue only to have it burn to the ground. They were instead married at the White House, in a ceremony officiated by former President Conrad Dalton.
